American Pastoral

I’m reading the great American Pastoral by Phillip Roth. Apart from his masterful portrayal of racial and economic tensions in 1960’s New Jersey, I’m led to think about how little any of us are able to cope with happiness, as if it it just isn’t in our nature. We struggle to be happy but the reality is we find meaning in the struggle and all the dreams  we have of happiness only really find their place in eternity.
