“These men who have turned the world upside down have come here too, and Jason has received them as guests! They are all acting contrary to Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king—Jesus!” (Acts 17:6-7)
I love this verse from the Daily Prayer readings for today. It is a telling insight into how Christianity was perceived in the ancient world. In contrast to the modern western world where the expectation is that faith stays out of politics, the early church really did turn the world upside down by giving dignity and a voice to ordinary people, and by challenging the totalitarian rule of the Emperor (which was a dangerous and revolutionary act) and declaring a kingdom of a humble king. And it is no less true of Christianity today, in an economic empire which treats people as consumers and measure value in terms of capital. We are turning the world upside down by saying there is another King and another Kingdom.
